"Well, we knew that this year had been extraordinarily hot. And this is confirmation that this is the hottest year on record. And not only that, it has for the first time, the global temperature of the past year has breached the threshold of one and a half degrees above its pre-industrial level. And the reason that significant is because that is the strong end of the target that was agreed by countries in Paris in 2015 as being a place where we wanted to avoid."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Bob Ward, policy and communications director at the Grantham Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics:
"There’s very clear evidence that around the world the higher temperatures cause more evaporation and cause more rapid drying out of vegetation. And areas that have been previously prone to wildfires are becoming even more dangerous. It’s not increasing the likelihood of a fire starting, which might be due to natural or manmade causes, but what it does mean is that when a fire starts it spreads very rapidly because the vegetation dries out. And we know that in California in particular, there have been long periods of drought the last couple of years where a lot wetter, but the last six months have also been incredibly dry."

"The fact that you’ve got three globally internationally recognised organisations providing the same result that this is a record warm year means that it’s undeniable. And the only people who try to deny it are those who simply can’t confront reality."

STORYLINE:
Earth recorded its hottest year ever in 2024, with such a big jump that the planet temporarily passed a major climate threshold, several weather monitoring agencies announced Friday.

"We’re at the edge of what climate has existed during the development of human civilisation," climate expert Bob Ward told The AP.
