STORYLINE:
The Venezuelan capital Caracas was getting ready on Friday to host the inauguration of President Nicolas Maduro’s third consecutive term as leader.

Several central avenues of the city were blocked for the celebration under heavy police patrols.

On the streets, many expressed uncertainty and hoped that the day will pass peacefully after a Thursday of protests both for and against the government.

"I am disappointed by many things I saw. Reality is not as we are led to believe. Let’s hope for the best," said Marlyn Ruiz to The Associated Press.

Venezuela announced on Friday the closure of one of its borders with Colombia.

The governor of the Venezuelan state of Tachira, Freddy Bernal, announced in a statement that the border with Colombia would be closed from 5 a.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday to guarantee security and peace.

Venezuela placed barricades in the middle of the Simon Bolivar International Bridge, which crosses the Tachira River, a natural border between Colombia and Venezuela.

On Thursday, Colombian Foreign Minister Gilberto Murillo had said that Colombia did not recognize the July 28 election results, after which Venezuela’s National Electoral Council declared Nicolas Maduro the winner.

Maduro is about to extend his increasingly repressive rule over Venezuela until 2031.

Maduro will be sworn in on Friday, despite credible evidence that his opponent won the latest election and following protests against his plan to serve a third six-year term.

On Thursday, as hundreds of anti-Maduro protesters took to the streets of the capital, Caracas, aides to Opposition Leader María Corina Machado said she was briefly detained by security forces and coerced into recording videos.

The popular former lawmaker had been addressing the rally to demand that opposition candidate Edmundo González be sworn in as president instead of Maduro.

The president’s supporters called the reports of Machado’s arrest fake news.
