1. Smoke rising in the Gaza Strip as seen from southern Israel ++MUTE++
STORYLINE:
A column of smoke was seen rising from northern Gaza Strip on Friday, as Israel’s offensive in the besieged Palestinian territory continues.
The cause of the smoke, seen from southern Israel, was not known.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people and abducting around 250.
A third of the 100 hostages still held in Gaza are believed to be dead.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said Thursday that 46,006 Palestinians have been killed and 109,378 wounded in the war, with no end in sight.
It has said women and children were more than half the fatalities but does not say how many of the dead were fighters or civilians.
The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. It blames Hamas for civilian deaths because it says militants operate in residential areas.
Israel’s military offensive has caused widespread destruction and displaced about 90% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million, many of them multiple times.
Winter has arrived, and hundreds of thousands are sheltering in tents near the sea. A small number of children have died from exposure to the cold.
