STORYLINE:
Women from different groups met in northeast Syria to discuss their future under the new Syrian government.
A forum organized by the Kurdish women’s council brought together hundreds from across ethnic and religious groups.
"This forum is about getting our voice heard, the voice of the people of northern and eastern Syria as well as the voice of women from all backgrounds," said Georgette Barsum, president of the Syriac Women’s Union in Syria.
Islamist insurgents ousted Syrian president Bashar Assad last month, bringing his rule to a dramatic end.
Since Assad’s ouster, representatives from the nation’s new de facto authorities have said that the new Syria will be inclusive and open to the world.
"The forum was held because of what Syria is going through now. We have entered a new stage and it is a critical stage in the modern history of Syria," said Amina Omar, a member of women’s council in northeast Syria.
“The aim is to come out with a unified stance for women in northern and eastern Syria and to include women’s rights in the next Syrian constitution,” she added.
