STORYLINE:
Several thousand people in Vienna on Thursday evening protested against a possible participation of the right-wing Freedom Party in a government coalition.

Protesters shone flashlights at the Austrian chancellery building and shouted slogans like “all of Vienna hates the FPÖ” and “Nazis out”.

The Russia-friendly, anti-immigration, Eurosceptic Freedom Party won Austria’s parliamentary election in September but was initially shunned by other parties.

But their efforts to put together a coalition without it failed.

On Monday, Herbert Kickl, leader of the Freedom Party, received a mandate to try to form what would be the first national government led by the far right since World War II.

That came after the conservative Austrian People’s Party of outgoing Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who announced his resignation Saturday, made an abrupt U-turn on its previous refusal to contemplate working with the Freedom Party under Kickl.

"That you have someone like that in government is simply unacceptable, someone who calls himself Volkskanzler (“the people’s chancellor”) – and that in Austria," said protester Sinda Soltane.
