STORYLINE:
Mourners gathered at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah on Thursday morning to bid farewell to those killed by Israeli airstrikes.
Israeli airstrikes killed late Wednesday at least nine people, including four babies, and two women, according to Palestinians medics.
Three of the babies were killed in Central Gaza, and one in Gaza City.
Among the dead in Deir al-Balah were two babies, including a 1-week-old baby girl and her mother, as well as a child and a man, all members of the same family.
The other baby’s age could not immediately be determined because of how badly the body was burned, an AP journalist reported.
Inside the morgue Thursday morning, a man sat on his knees to bid farewell to his relative, slamming the door of a mortuary fridge in grief and anger.
Dozens of people then gathered outside the hospital to perform a funeral prayer.
The bodies of those killed were laid on the floor in front of them – including a closed box containing the remains of one of the babies, whose body was brought to the hospital in parts.
Another baby was laid on the floor in a plastic bag with the body of her mother.
More than 46,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israel-Hamas war, Gaza’s Health Ministry said Thursday, as the conflict raged into a 16th month with no end in sight.
The ministry said a total of 46,006 Palestinians have been killed and 109,378 wounded.
It has said women and children make up more than half the fatalities, but does not say how many of the dead were fighters or civilians.
