STORYLINE:
With a population of over 14 million, Tokyo is considered one of the largest cities in the world.
The city today is known for its unique blend of traditional and modern culture, attracting around 15 million foreign tourists each year, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
The most iconic landmark is perhaps Tokyo Tower, completed in 1958 as a symbol of Japan’s rebirth after the war.
At 332.9 meters, it was the tallest tower in the country until the construction of Tokyo Skytree in 2012.
Formerly known as Edo, the history of the Japanese capital dates back to the early 1600s.
The city was renamed Tokyo during the Meiji Restoration in 1868 – a period of rapid modernization and Westernization.
Japan’s top 225 companies trade on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which opens at 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) on weekdays.
The largest political party in Japan, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), lost their majority in the lower house of parliament in October 2024, the first time since 2009.
