STORYLINE:
Fierce wildfires are raging in the Los Angeles area, fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds, sending residents fleeing from burning homes through flames, ferocious winds and towering clouds of smoke.
Thousands of firefighters were battling at least three separate blazes on Wednesday, from the Pacific Coast inland to Pasadena.
Flames broke out on Tuesday evening near a nature preserve in the inland foothills northeast of LA. Another blaze that started hours earlier ripped through the cityโs Pacific Palisades neighborhood.
Kim Hallinger lives with her husband, mother, six rabbits, four cats and a dog in Altadena. She evacuated with her mother and pets while her husband stayed behind to try to protect the house.
"I’s really scary when you can see the flames coming up over the houses two blocks away and you’re just getting out of the driveway and the smoke and the ash is so thick you can’t even see,: she said Wednesday at an evacuation center. "You can barely see five feet in front of you. It’s it’s like Armageddon."
A third wildfire started around 10:30 p.m. and quickly prompted evacuations in Sylmar, the northernmost neighborhood in Los Angeles.
