“And look, implementation has not proceeded as quickly as some wanted, but what I heard in Naqoura today gives me hope that we’re on the right track. And that the Lebanese armed forces are showing themselves to be highly capable partners, who understand the full breadth of Lebanese people and geography and therefore they are inspiring confidence in myself and the mechanism that Lebanon South will again be stable and secure.”

STORYLINE:
Amos Hochstein, U.S. envoy and Middle East advisor to the U.S. president, said on Monday that the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon is “going according to the plan,” but did not confirm whether it would be completed within the 60-day limit under the ceasefire conditions.
“We have 20 days left to reach the 60 days. We are going to continue the same work that has led to the successful withdrawal and deployment that we saw today,” he said.
The Lebanese army announced on Monday the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Naqoura and the phased deployment of the Lebanese army.
“I have every confidence from what I saw today and what I get reports from the team on the ground, that things are going as they should be and I think the Lebanese army is doing it’s job very, very well,” Hochstein said in response to a question on whether the Israeli military will complete its withdrawal by Jan. 26.
Meanwhile, Hochstein met Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who called for “a clear timetable to complete the Israeli withdrawal.”
