STORYLINE:
Hardy swimmers in Prague took to the cold waters of the Vltava River on Monday as they marked the Epiphany with an icy dip.

The "Three Kings" swim has become an annual event on the Epiphany with Monday’s plunge the 15th held by the organisers.

"We started with seven people, three kings plus two swimmers, and you can see it’s a big event now. This year, it was about 40 people," said Zdenek Hrdy, one of the swimmers who took part in the event.

Some Western Christian churches know the Epiphany as Three Kings Day.

It recalls the visit of three Magi, or wise men, to the infant Jesus, and their sense of wonder at the encounter. It is the 12th day after Christmas and closes the Christmas season.

Eastern traditions call it Theophany, and they focus on the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. Orthodox Christians also know it as the Baptism of Christ.

Boats transported the swimmers to the river near the Charles Bridge.

They entered the water from a boat before swimming to the shore near the port they just left.

The water temperature was a chilly 3.5 degrees Celsius (38.3 degrees Fahrenheit), and participants stayed in the water for around 10 minutes.

Polar swimming has a long tradition in the Czech Republic.

Similar events are held in other cities every winter.
