STORYLINE:
After five decades of dynastic rule over their country, Syrians in the city of Hama are rejoicing at the fall of the Assad ruling family.
But the joy is mixed with feelings of sorrow for the series of massacres perpetrated in their city by Assads, the father and the son.
More than four decades ago, Hafez Assad, then president of Syria, launched what came to be known as the Hama Massacre.
Between 10,000 to 40,000 people were killed or disappeared in the government attack on the central Syrian city. It began on Feb. 2, 1982, and lasted for nearly a month, leaving the city in ruins.
Since the fall of Bashar Assad, Syrians in Hama have been celebrating in the streets of the city.
Hazzam Al-Obaisi is one of the residents of Hama who fled his city to the north and then to Turkey at the beginning of the Syrian revolution.
From 2011 to 2016, Al-Obaisi fought with the "Al-Farouk Brigade" in the north, then moved to Turkey after 2016 due to illness.
“I cannot express my feelings, you will make me cry, I cannot express it. It is the joy of life for the overthrow of the greatest tyrant, Assad, whether the son or the father. Thank God the revolution was victorious over the tyrant of the age” Hazzam al-Obaisi said.
Now the Syrian opposition rebels are in control of most of the cities in Syria, posters of Bashar Assad and his father have been torn down and security offices have been closed after the release of the prisoners. Scenes unimaginable in recent years.
“Thank God we have achieved our main goal, which is to overthrow the regime in all its symbols and components” Mohammad Freiji said
