“We are trying to protect our environment using sustainable material so we try and reuse denim, denim that has been thrown or put to waste. So, that’s where the first process starts with, sourcing the wasted denim or the offcuts of denim, sourcing materials. And then we now look at bringing it into our factory which is at MOTIV on Port Bell Road where we start cutting out patterns and pieces to specific designs.”

“I love the authenticity about the products here. I love the creativity. I believe they really think out of the box and try and repurpose denim. It gives denim more depth and makes us appreciate denim more because denim has really been a beautiful material that has been here since forever and Denim Cartel gives it more depth to the material and as a brand.”

“For the longest time in our country we were settling for whatever trash we got from outside countries but now with people like Troy and many others of his kind here at MOTIV and all over the place they are creating for us affordable clothing that will basically wipe out the secondhand stuff. So, in about a decade or two there might be a time where there will be no rubbish on the streets but only authentically worn stuff from here, and I think Troy is doing a great job to just wipe out the second, third or sometimes fourthhand clothing because this shirt here by the way, I think it had like five owners before I got it so yeah, there you go.”

STORYLINE:
In the heart of Uganda’s capital, shoppers jostle for space in the tiny corridors between stalls filled with second hand clothes – mostly from European countries.

Hung up, a selection of washed blue, red and black denim jackets are for sale at Owino market, which is one of the largest markets for secondhand clothes.

Downtown Kampala’s Owino Market has long been a go-to enclave for people looking for affordable but quality-made used clothes.

Here, anything from secondhand bras, shirts, trousers and jackets including denim are on sale for a cheap price.

However, at the market denim is a slow seller, according to one of the traders.

Now a Ugandan entrepreneur is hoping to address this issue.

Troy Elimu came up with an idea to repurpose secondhand denim.

He sends employees to Owino market each day in downtown Kampala to sort through second hand clothes to pick out the best denim finds.
