STORYLINE:
France’s newly formed government under Prime Minister Francois Bayrou held its first cabinet meeting at the Elysee Palace on Friday.
Bayrou led a breakfast meeting ahead of the cabinet meeting at the Interior Ministry across the street from the Elysee Palace.
The Prime Minister and government ministers then walked as a group to the Elysee Palace to join President Emmanuel Macron for the cabinet meeting.
Bayrou wants a united approach to avoid the censure that ousted his predecessor – Michel Barnier and his government – after only 90 days.
The most urgent order of business is passing a 2025 budget.
Financial markets, ratings agencies and the European Commission are pushing France to bring down its deficit, to comply with EU rules limiting debt and keep France’s borrowing costs from spiralling.
That would threaten the stability and prosperity of all countries that share the euro currency.
