Background to Story: The prehistoric cave paintings
at Lascaux, in south-west France, were closed to the
public in 1963 because of damage by microbes and moisture.
But now the paintings, among Europe’s greatest art treasures,
are to be put on view again in a remarkable fascimile,
created on a site just a few miles from the original.
