(3 Dec 1971) President Sadat of Egypt has been telling his fellow countrymen that 1971 is the year in which the conflict with Israel will finally be resolved into peace or war. In October, he appeared to have come to the conclusion that it would be war. In a speech to frontline Egyptian troops on the Suez Canal, he said he saw no chance of a peaceful solution, and that Egypt would have to fight to regain its lost lands. Much has happened in the Middle East since the 1967 war. Russia, for example, has provided Egypt with huge amounts of military assistance and equipment. Even so, Israel remains convinced that the quality of its armed forces, together with the defensibility of its present frontiers, will assure it of victory should hostilities break out afresh.
