RR7111 MIDDLE EAST: THE FRONTIERS OF PEACE

(14 Mar 1971) RR7111 MIDDLE EAST: THE FRONTIERS OF PEACE

The recent refusal of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat to renew the ceasefire with Israel has increased still further the tension in the Middle East. Israel’s being criticised for the way it is settling in to the Occupied Territories, with guarded farming communities in the West Bank and big new housing estates around the once-divided city of Jerusalem. Whatever peace settlement is eventually agreed upon, Israel seems determined to hang on to Jerusalem – and also to Sharm el Sheik, the strategic outpost on the straits of Tiran, which guards Israeli rights of passage through the Red Sea. This Report backgrounds these problems and includes a long interview with Israeli premier Mrs. Golda Meir as well as with Mr. Anwar Nusseibeh, a prominent West Bank Arab politician.
