"We are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism. We’re aggressively running down all of the leads to identify the possible subject’s associates. We’re working to ensure that there is no further threat. We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible. We are actively running down every lead, including those of his known associates."
STORYLINE:
Authorities say a driver wrought carnage on New Orleans’ famed French Quarter early on New Year’s Day, killing at least 10 people as he rammed a pickup truck into a crowd before being shot to death by police.
More than 30 people were injured as Wednesday’s attack turned festive Bourbon Street into macabre mayhem. The FBI is investigating it as an act of terrorism. Authorities are looking into whether other people may have been involved.
The driver was identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar. Officials say he was born in the US and lived in Texas.
Guns and pipe bombs were also found in the vehicle, according to a Louisiana State Police intelligence bulletin obtained by The Associated Press. The devices, which were concealed within coolers, were wired for remote detonation, the bulletin said, and a corresponding remote control was discovered inside the vehicle.
The FBI said other potential explosive devices were also located in the French Quarter. According to the intelligence bulletin, surveillance footage captured three men and a woman placing one of multiple improvised explosive devices.
The Sugar Bowl college football playoff quarterfinal between Georgia and Notre Dame, originally scheduled for Wednesday night at the nearby Superdome, will now be played on Thursday.
