STORYLINE:
Bourbon Street reopened Thursday after 14 people were killed and more than 30 injured in New Orleans when a driver rammed into a crowd early on New Year’s Day.

Speaking to reporters New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick declared the street open to the public Thursday afternoon.

"We are confident that we can open Bourbon Street and the rest of our city," said Kirkpatrick, adding that there will be heighten police presence, heavy trucks blocking streets and barriers on sidewalks as a preventive measure to stop vehicles.

Jordan Templeton said he was out in Bourbon Street on New Years Day but had left before the attack took place.

"It just feels really somber being here," said Templeton. "I think that if there is anywhere that it’s safe, it’s probably here right now," he added.

The FBI says the New Orleans truck attack acted alone when he drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers.

The driver had posted videos on social media hours before the early Wednesday carnage saying he was inspired by the Islamic State group and expressing a desire to kill, President Joe Biden said.

The FBI has identified the driver as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran.
