STORYLINE:
France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot met on Thursday with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, just over a month after a fragile truce went into effect ending a monthslong war between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
Now, the Lebanese military is tasked to step in and deploy in the south while the Israeli military must withdraw from the south during the first 60 days of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
However, the Israeli military has still conducted airstrikes in southern Lebanon, and its forces have yet to withdraw, almost halfway through the two-month period.
It says Hezbollah still has armed presence and infrastructure in those areas that it needs to take out.
Since the ceasefire went into effect on Nov. 27, the Israeli army has conducted near-daily military operations in southern villages, including firing gunshots, house demolitions, excavations, tank shelling and strikes.
