++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
New Orleans – 2 January 2025
1. Wide of press conference
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Jeff Landry, (R) Louisiana:
“What happened yesterday was akin to those who are old enough to remember jigsaw puzzles and that you would take a thousand piece jigsaw puzzle and you empty the box and you’ve got to start sifting through those pieces and you want to start if you’re real good, you start at the corners. Right. Try to put your corners together. And from yesterday to today, over a thousand law enforcement agents and officers, men and women, have been poring over countless amounts of data, of videos, of surveillances, interviews, tracking down every possible lead that came to us.”

“First and foremost, let me be very clear about this point. This was an act of terrorism. It was premeditated and an evil act.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Raia, Deputy Assistant Director for FBI Counter-Terrorism Division:
“But at this point currently and this is another position, another fact I want to be clear on, we do not assess at this point that anyone else involved in this attack is involved in this attack except for Shamsud-Din Jabbar the subject you’ve already been briefed on.”

STORYLINE:
The FBI now says the New Orleans truck attacker acted alone in an “act of terrorism” when he drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers early Wednesday, killing 14 people.
The driver had posted videos on social media hours before the carnage saying he was inspired by the Islamic State group and expressing a desire to kill, President Joe Biden said.
The FBI obtained surveillance video of Shamsud-Din Jabbar placing the explosive devices where they were found, said Christopher Raia, deputy assistant director of the FBI’s counter-terrorism division.
Fifteen people were killed in the attack, Christopher Raia said. That number includes the 14 victims killed plus the assailant, Shamsud-Din Jabbar.
The FBI also found “no definitive link” between the New Orleans attack and the Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas.
The FBI has received more than 400 tips from the public, some from New Orleans and others from other states, Christopher Raia, deputy assistant director of the FBI’s counter-terrorism division, said at a news conference on Thursday.
State and local officials expressed confidence in reopening Bouron Street as the city prepares to move forward with the college football playoff game, the Sugar Bowl.
“The confidence is there to reopen Bourbon Street to the public before game time today,” New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell said.
