STORYLINE:
Residents of the city of Homs in central Syria took to the streets on Thursday night to celebrate security measures that were carried out by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham to restore security in the city.
Scores of people gathered in the city centre chanting slogans against former President Bashar Assad.
Security forces in military vehicles began shooting in the air, with crowds chanting loudly as they passed by.
Abdulrahman Barghout, a shop owner in the city expressed his support for HTS.
"Thank God safety and security have been restored to the country.”
Syrian security forces and armed vehicles were deployed in the city of Homs Thursday daytime to look for militants affiliated with Assad, state media reported, adding that they had refused to turn in their weapons to the new authorities.
In early December, a lightning insurgency took out the decades long rule of Assad in less than two weeks.
HTS have since run much of war-torn Syria under the de facto rule of its leader Ahmad al-Sharaa.
Security forces over the past few weeks have raided and arrested security officials who worked under Assad in his notorious web of intelligence and security branches.
