STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of people gathered in front of parliament in the capital of Georgia to welcome the New Year.

A huge table was set up in the center of Tbilisi to mark the occasion and to demonstrate the unity of pro-European protesters.

Georgia’s ex-president Salome Zourabichvili participated in the event and was welcomed with cheers and applause.

Protests have continued without pause since November 28, when the prime minister announced the suspension of EU integration.

On Sunday, a new president, Mikheil Kavelashvili, took the oath of office.

Pro-European protesters and opposition parties have refused to recognize the legitimacy of Kavelashvili.

They claim he was elected by an illegitimate parliament formed after rigged elections.
