“The changing international dynamics in the New Year is a fierce challenge to democracies in the world. The Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict are still ongoing. Authoritarian countries such as China, Russia, North Korea and Iran are still collaborating to threaten the international order that is based on rules. STORYLINE:
President Lai Ching-te on Wednesday said he would continue to strengthen Taiwan’s defense in the face of China’s threats.

In an address marking the first day of the new year, he underlined how everyone had a duty to protect the island’s democracy.

Lai described China, Russia, North Korea and Iran as "authoritarian countries" that collaborated to threaten the international order.

“Taiwan must be prepared for danger in times of peace," he went on.

China claims Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy of 23 million people, as its own territory.

It has pledged to annex Taiwan, through military force if necessary, and sends ships and military planes near the island almost daily.

Beijing bristles at other countries’ formal exchanges with Taiwan.

The United States, like most countries, doesn’t recognize Taiwan as a country but is its main unofficial backer and sells it arms.
