Austrias President Alexander van der Bellen says he will hold talks with the leader of the far-right Freedom Party on Monday, to seek a way out of the country’s political stalemate.
The president made the announcement after meeting Chancellor Karl Nehammer – who is resigning following the breakdown of coalition talks between his conservatives and the Social Democrats. Together, the two parties had sought to prevent the far-right Freedom Party – which won the most votes in September’s election – from forming a government.
The breakdown of the talks could pave the way for far-right FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl to come to power, with the conservatives serving as junior partners – despite previous unwillingness to work with the far-right.
