Background to Story: A year ago, on 12th September 1980, the army took power in Turkey in a bloodless coup. Parliamentary democracy is suspended and extremists of the Left and Right have been put on trial. But many Turks have welcomed the first year of military rule because political violence has been halted and the economy shows signs
of improvment. A new form of parliamentary democracy is also planned.
