RR8114/2 INDIA THE RAJASTHAN CANAL CUTS 2 OF 2

(3 Apr 1981) The world’s largest irrigation project is slowly changing the face of the desert state of Rajasthan, in North West India. About 500 km of the 650 km Rajasthan Canal have now been completed, channeling Himalayan waters deep into desert areas. Fruit trees, vegetables and field crops now flourish in newly irrigated areas, and livestock is no longer decimated by the long droughts. Clean drinking water means that water-borne diseases are being eradicated. This is an important and interesting story to mark the beginning of the UN World Water Decade.
