"Well, our wish and hope for the new year is to achieve something good for the Kurdish nation. The Kurdish people have suffered a lot, and were oppressed all the time. We accepted everything in order to avoid injustice, but still, no one is tolerating us. Also, we ask President (Nechirvan) Barzani to issue an amnesty for the prisoners. Prisons are overcrowded. STORYLINE:
A lively pop-up market next to the citadel in Irbil has created a festive atmosphere for Iraqis during the holiday season.
It is drawing visitors who are shopping gifts and essentials for New Year’s and Orthodox Christmas.
Local authorities want to use the market and the festivities as an opportunity to bring people to the city’s ancient citadel and boost the local economy during the holidays.
The seasonal market has temporary shops selling traditional food, clothes and home decor, among other items.
The market opens its doors from the afternoon until midnight.
With New Year’s around the corner, Irbil residents said they are hoping that 2025 will bring them positive changes.
"Our wish and hope for the new year is to achieve something good for the Kurdish nation. The Kurdish people have suffered a lot," Irbil resident Sabir Hamad Amin said.
A New Year’s concert will be held at the market street near the citadel, which has been listed as a World Heritage site by the the United Nations’ cultural agency since 2014.
