"This victory means that no more mining licenses or concessions can be issued in the Choco Andino. So that is what has been earned, which is a lot, because now we can see that the Choco Andino will have a space of guaranteed sustainability, unlike other areas that are affected precisely by mining companies"

7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Inty Arcos, Environmental Activist:
"It is one of the most diverse places in the world, one of the few places on the planet where you can identify and describe new species, both plants and animals. And that could be at risk if we allow mining to advance and that is what we voted for. That is what we want to be enforced, to be enforced from all state authorities, from the central government to the parish councils"

STORYLINE:
One year after a popular consultation succeeded in prohibiting any mining activity in the Andean Choco biosphere reserve, members of the organization that promoted it demanded that the authorities act and review the mining concessions granted in this area.
On August 20, 2023, the population of Quito, with 68% support during a consultation promoted by the collective ‘Quito without mining’, decided to prohibit the exploitation of metallic mining in the 124,000 hectares that make up the Andean Choco.
"This victory means that no more mining licenses or concessions can be issued in the Choco Andino. So that is what has been earned, which is a lot, because now we can see that the Choco Andino will have a space of guaranteed sustainability, unlike other areas that are affected precisely by mining companies", said Esteban Barriga, member of the Quito Without Mining Collective.
The area has twelve metallic mining concessions and another six in process, covering approximately 27,000 hectares.
"It is one of the most diverse places in the world, one of the few places on the planet where you can identify and describe new species, both plants and animals." said environmental activist Inty Arcos to The Associated Press.
The Andean Choco, a few hours from the bustling traffic of Quito, unfolds like a jungle forest, where the lush vegetation is home to a rich fauna.
It is estimated to be home to approximately 10,000 species of plants, of which an estimated 25% are endemic.
In fauna, 270 species of mammals, 210 reptiles, more than 200 birds, and 130 amphibians have been registered.
