STORYLINE:
A Chinese spokesperson denied China’s involvement in the hacking of several US Treasury Department workstations on Tuesday.
The agency accused Chinese hackers of remotely accessing workstations and unclassified documents after compromising a third-party software service provider.
Mao Ning, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, reaffirmed China’s opposition to hacking.
The department did not provide details on how many workstations had been accessed or what sort of documents the hackers may have obtained.
The hack was being investigated as a “major cybersecurity incident,” it added.
The incident comes as U.S. officials are continuing to grapple with the fallout of a massive Chinese cyber espionage campaign known as Salt Typhoon that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans.
Mao reiterated China’s cooperation with the World Health Organization over the investigation of the origins of COVID-19 when asked about the agency’s latest call on China to be more transparent on the virus data.
In a statement issued on Monday, the WHO urged China to share data to help understand the origins of COVID-19, five years after the pandemic began in Wuhan.
Despite global progress, many questions about the virus’s origins remain unanswered, partly due to China’s lack of transparency.
Mao argued that China had made the “greatest contribution to global tracing research” by inviting international experts to the country for field research and pointed to the need for a worldwide tracing effort.
Mao also commented on Syria’s appointment of several foreign fighters, including a Chinese Uyghur known as the commander of the separatist Turkistan Islamic Party’s (TIP) forces in Syria, to the country’s military positions.
Referring to the group with its Chinese name East Turkestan Islamic Movement, Mao said China designated it as a “terrorist organization” and called on the international community to “fully recognize the violent and terrorist nature” of the group.
Beijing says the movement is dedicated to the violent overthrow of Chinese rule in the northwestern region of Xinjiang which is home to the country’s Turkic Muslim Uyghur minority.
