He was such a prominent, I feel (like) he was a prominent president, like even though he was a one-term president, people still talk about him quite a bit. And I think he’s had almost a lasting legacy beyond his presidency, like he’s almost done more good beyond the Oval Office, if that makes sense.”

STORYLINE:
Tributes to former President Jimmy Carter were pouring in from his small hometown of Plains, Georgia, and around the world.
The news of Carter’s death brought a steady stream of visitors to Plains on Monday to pay respects.
Among them was the Rev. Joe Parramore, a pastor who drove 2 ½ hours from Tallahassee, Florida, to see the former president’s hometown for the first time.
Parramore said he deeply admired Carter for “his humanness and his humility,” as well as his staunch advocacy for human rights, ending racial discrimination and support for LGBTQ Americans.
“I think the life that Jimmy Carter lived is certainly that of a human saint,” Parramore said outside Plains High School, now a museum operated by the National Park Service.
Carter graduated from the school in 1941. Parramore brought a bouquet of flowers with him to leave in Carter’s hometown.
“To be able to show that kind of respect for such a great human being, I think can only be done in person,” he said.
Amber DeJohn and Matt Pitlock were on their way back to Tallahassee after spending time in Michigan when they heard of Carter’s passing.
