Background to Story: 25 years ago, in October 1956, a large proportion of the
Hungarian people joined in an anti-Soviet uprising. Soviet troops crushed the
short-lived rebellion. Janos Kadar was installed as leader, and today he heads one
of the most prosperous of East European states.
