(13 Feb 1981) Britain’s last colony on the American mainland, Belize, is due to become independent by the end of 1981. The United Nations General Assembly last November voted overwhelmingly in favour of independence for Belize, formerly British Honduras. The one dissenting voice comes from Guatemala, Belize’s Central American neighbour, which has longstanding territorial claims to the territory. British troops could be invited to remain in Belize after independence if no settlement with Guatemala is reached.
