STORYLINE:
As the world prepares to welcome in 2025, Myanmar’s Karen minority have beaten everyone to it.
On Monday, many Karen joined together at a venue just outside Yangon to mark the day with traditional dance troupes, music, speeches and entertainment, which included a race to climb a greased pole.
The ethnic people – the third largest of the country’s many groups – decide the date based on the lunar calendar and the end of the rice harvest, rather than with reference to the Roman system. It’s recognized as a national holiday.
The celebration is a rare chance to set aside the fears and dangers of the ongoing civil war that has torn the Southeast Asian country apart.
The Karen’s home state, in southeast Myanmar, has seen heavy fighting in the last year, as armed opponents of the country’s military rulers battled to drive the army out of key strategic areas.
The generals seized power almost four years ago, overthrowing the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and violently suppressing peaceful protests. Many of the demonstrators fled to the jungles and formed guerrilla units.
These then allied with battle-hardened, armed ethnic forces who’ve long fought for greater autonomy, including the Karen.
The combined opposition forces have had remarkable success capturing large swathes of territory and inflicting previously unimaginable defeats upon the powerful army.
