“Thanksgiving lunch at my house that I live in now, which is the Rosalynn grew up. We were all sitting around a table and he had been governor and just very nonchalantly just said, ‘Oh, I have something I need to tell y’all.’ And, you know, everybody’s like, okay. I don’t think anybody even stopped eating, you know, it was like, okay, you know? And he said, ‘I’m running for president.’ And my dad said, ‘President of what?’ And he said, ‘The United States.’ And my dad said, ‘Oh, yeah, right.’ And we just all laughed and went on about eating. And then about a month later, the peanut brigade started and as a sixth or seventh grader, I was on a bus headed to Jacksonville, Florida, with my grandmother, which Rosalynn’s mom and we were handing out fliers and pamphlets door to door, and I was asking people to vote for my uncle for president of the United States.”

“I got a call one day, I was in class and my phone rang and he’s the only one that would ever come up, you know, private number. So, I excuse myself, walked out of class, I answered the phone and I said, ‘Yes, sir, what can I do for you?’ And he said, ‘Andy, you have to get to your house right now. ‘I said, ‘What? Why? What’s going on?’ He said, ‘They’re not putting your roof on, right? They’re not listening to me. And it needs fixed or it’s going to leak.’ I said, ‘Okay, I am on my way.’ He stayed in, waited to make sure I came. So I told the foreman of that was building the house. I said, ‘Look, you may not know who this man is because you’re very, very young. I don’t care if he tells you to paint the house purple. Just do whatever he says.’ And everybody was happy.”
