STORYLINE:
Emergency workers sifted through the wreckage and investigators collected evidence at the site of a deadly South Korean plane crash that killed 179 people.
Fire crews were also joined by police on Monday morning at Muan international Airport, south of Seoul where a Jeju Air passenger plane smashed into a concrete wall after an emergency landing.
The 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 jet was arriving from Bangkok when the crash happened.
Workers have retrieved the flight data and cockpit voice recorders of the plane’s black box, which will be examined by government experts investigating the cause of the crash and fire, according to the Transport Ministry.
The incident came as South Korea is embroiled in a political crisis triggered by President Yoon Suk Yeol’s stunning imposition of martial law and ensuing impeachment. Last Friday, South Korean lawmakers impeached acting President Han Duck-soo, leading Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok to take over.
