“I’m pleased with the result. I only regret that the victory wasn’t quite at 50%, so that we wouldn’t have to go to the polls again in two weeks’ time.”

STORYLINE:
Some residents of Zagreb were on Monday reacting to the news of incumbent President Zoran Milanovic winning most of the votes in the first round of a presidential election.
Pre-election polls have predicted that left-leaning Milanovic and his main challenger Dragan Primorac – a forensic scientist with little political experience but backed by the ruling conservative HDZ party – were far ahead in front of six other candidates.
On Sunday evening Milanovic won 49% of the vote, falling short of securing outright victory by merely 5,000 votes, while Primorac trailed far behind with 19%.
They will face off again in the second round on Jan. 12.
Left-leaning Milanovic is an outspoken critic of Western military support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
He is often compared to Donald Trump for his combative style of communication with political opponents.
The most popular politician in Croatia, 58-year-old Milanovic has served as prime minister in the past.
Populist in style, he has been a fierce critic of current conservative Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, and continuous sparring between the two has lately marked Croatia’s political scene.
