“Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that the Middle East belongs to the people of the Middle East, not a battleground for major powers, nor should it become a victim of geopolitical competition by external countries. The urgent task for the Middle East to transition from chaos to governance is to immediately cease fire and violence, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, adhere to political solutions, and resume dialogue and negotiations. This is China’s basic stance on the Middle East issue.”

STORYLINE:
China offered “deep condolences” for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter who passed away on Sunday.
Carter was 100 years old and had spent more than a year in hospice care.
He established formal diplomatic relations with Beijing and welcomed China’s paramount leader Deng Xiaoping’s landmark trip to the White House in 1979.
“He made significant contributions to the development of China-U.S. relations and the friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two countries over the years. We hold him in high regard for this,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a news briefing on Monday when commenting on the passing of Carter.
Also, Mao echoed President Xi Jinping, expressing condolences to South Korea for the deadly plane crash that killed 179 people at the weekend.
The Boeing 737-800 plane operated by South Korea’s budget airline Jeju Air skidded off a runway at Muan International Airport, slammed into a fence and burst into a fireball on Sunday.
All but two of the 181 people aboard were killed in the incident.
Separately, Mao briefed reporters about the talks between Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Iranian counterpart Seyyed Abbas Araghchi in Beijing on Saturday.
“Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that the Middle East belongs to the people of the Middle East, not a battleground for major powers, nor should it become a victim of geopolitical competition by external countries,” Mao said.
Mao quoted Wang, saying that China respected the Middle East countries’ sovereignty, territorial integrity and legitimate concerns and was ready to continue to play a constructive role in helping maintain peace and stability in the region.
