“Very shortly thereafter, they go straight to the runway and if you notice, the landing gear is not down. Also, the, the, the wing was not configured for landing, which means it was still set up for high speed flight. All of that resulted in the airplane approaching the runway at a much higher speed than normal. That is not something a pilot would do if they had other alternatives.”

“The 737-800 has been in service well over 20 years. There’s 4,000 of them flying around. It is one of Boeing’s most successful airplanes. It flies for a very large number of airlines. Hitting birds is not a Boeing issue. Landing on a concrete, on a runway and then skidding into a concrete barrier is not a Boeing issue.”

“Both the cockpit voice recorder and the digital flight data recorder have been recovered and they are either in Washington or en route to it, so one of them has been damaged pretty badly, but it is highly likely that they’ll be able to get some information off of that and we’ll have that information pretty shortly. That should give us some insight into what happened here.”

South Korea has vowed thorough investigations to find what caused a plane crash that killed 179 people, saying Monday that it will also inspect all Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by the country’s airlines.
