“This festival is in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the launch of the Fatah Movement (party) and in support of the rule of law in the Jenin governorate, reinforcing the sovereignty of the law, strengthening the steadfastness of our Palestinian national project, and ensuring security and safety for our children, elders, and men. We, in most difficult times, are often surprised by Fatah’s steadfastness, its real presence, and its ability to defend its project and the interests of our people. Today, this was truly a festival that reflects a kind of referendum in the Jenin governorate following the recent events. This means that the Palestinian masses have come to celebrate the launch of Fatah and renew the pledge to the Palestinian people, our national project, and to President Mahmoud Abbas, his government, and his political formation."

We are here to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the launch of the Fatah Movement (party) and call for the application of law and order for everyone across all segments of the Palestinian people. The general situation is not comfortable; it is very bad. We are going through a very difficult and dangerous phase, particularly in Jenin. We call on everyone to respect the law because we are concerned and hope that there will be a system and law that protects everyone.”

STORYLINE:
A funeral was held on Sunday for a Palestinian woman was shot and killed in her home in the volatile West Bank town of Jenin, where the Palestinian Authority this month launched a rare campaign against militants.

The family of Shatha al-Sabbagh, a 22-year-old journalism student, said she was killed by a sniper with the Palestinian security forces late Saturday while she was with her mother and two small children.

They said there were no militants in the area at the time.

A statement from the Palestinian security forces said she was shot by “outlaws” — the term it has been using for local militants who have been battling Israeli forces in recent years.

The security forces condemned the shooting and vowed to investigate it.

The Western-backed Palestinian Authority exercises limited self-rule in parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

It is deeply unpopular among Palestinians, largely because it cooperates with Israel on security matters, even as Israel accuses it of incitement and of generally turning a blind eye to militancy.

In a statement, the al-Sabbagh family accused the Palestinian security forces of having become “repressive tools that practice terrorism against their own people instead of protecting their dignity and standing up to the (Israeli) occupation.”
