STORYLINE:
Crowds of circus enthusiasts gathered earlier this week to attend an international circus show taking place at the Iraqi capital.
Baghdad’s international circus, the first event of this kind in years, opened on Thursday with about 1500 visitors packing the city’s Zawra Park.
Children and adults welcomed the initiative of bringing such shows to entertain the families.
"This circus is very special. Thanks to God, we are seeing something like this in Baghdad; we only saw it on TV when we were kids,” said Zeid Abdulsalam, who went to see the show with his family.
"May Allah preserve this grace, safety, and security in Baghdad, and may we always witness these international events here," he added.
The show is expected to run in Iraq for six months. Performers from about 40 countries will entertain the audience with daily circus activities including clown acts, acrobatic feats, magic tricks, and dance performances.
"We’ve been preparing for this carnival (show) with the goal of making Iraqi children happy during the Christmas event,” said Nermin Sehuri, a circus performer from Egypt.
"It’s meant to encourage them and bring love and energy to the kids, despite whatever they may have gone through,” commented Sehuri.
According to Zulfiqar al-Obeidi, head of relations at Zawra Park in Baghdad, the purpose of the circus is to showcase the beauty of the city.
"Baghdad has everything and is fully opening up to the outside world,” he said.
Ticket prices range from 10,000 to 50,000 Iraqi dinars ($7.60 to $38), depending on the seat location, while children under four years old can enter the circus for free.
