STORYLINE:
Couples in Cuba celebrated the end of a challenging 2024 by dancing to the rhythm of vibrant music across the island.

More than 100 pairs took to the streets of Havana on Saturday to join in the Rueda Casino dance in front of the capital’s seawall.

The event, according to the organizers, took place simultaneously in several other provinces across the island with organizers hoping to revive an old tradition for a new generation of Cubans.

Born in the 1950s, the casino dance is a dance of couples who sometimes form “circles” with several other pairs and participants make coordinated figures and choreographies or exchanges of partners.

Cuban musical groups with a strong Afro influence mark the rhythm and steps that the dancers must follow with their fast and sensual percussion

On a rainy afternoon, dressed in white sweatshirts and other clothing which identified their “circles," groups from nearly all municipalities gathered in the capital.

Hundreds of passers-by, including foreign tourists, either watched or joined the festivities.

Marion, a tourist visiting from Austria, said she couldn’t resist the music and dance, so she joined in.

Cubans are wrapping up a 2024 that was marked by economic deprivation, crises and various shortages, from fuel and medicine to water, as well as significant price increases.

Many participants in Saturday’s gatherings said they would prefer to come watch or dance than stay at home feeling anguished.
