STORYLINE:
Thousands of Tbilisi residents formed a human chain on Saturday as protests have continued throughout the country for over a month now.
Saturday’s protest, which involved members of civil society, political parties, and President Salome Zourabichvili, demanded new elections and the release of political prisoners who were arrested following anti-government protests
The protests were sparked by the Georgian Prime Minister’s announcement to halt EU integration talks. Hundreds of protesters were subsequently arrested.
The Georgian opposition does not recognize the results of October’s parliamentary elections, claiming they were rigged by the ruling Georgian Dream Party.
On Friday, the Biden administration imposed sanctions on the founder of Georgia’s ruling political party, which has steered the country away from a pro-Western stance and toward Russia, U.S. officials said.
The State and Treasury Departments said they imposed penalties on Georgian Dream Party founder and honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili “for undermining the democratic and Euro-Atlantic future of Georgia for the benefit of the Russian Federation," according to a statement.
