STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people gathered in India at the Marina Beach in the southern city of Chennai on Thursday to mark 20 years since the Indian Ocean tsunami struck from Indonesia to India, killing about 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
Women gathered to pour milk and flowers into the sea, with some sprinkling water on themselves and others taking photos on the sand.
In India, 10,749 people were killed according to official estimates, nearly 7,000 people in Tamil Nadu state alone.
Two decades later, the scars of the tsunami and the devastation caused by the 9.1 magnitude earthquake continue to haunt Indians.
Women from fishing communities also lit candles at the beach, and offered prayers on the sand to commemorate 20 years since the disaster.
