"(The purpose of martial law) was to sound the alarm against political abuse (by the opposition party) through the National Assembly. In order to protect its leader from criminal charges, the opposition party used its majority seats to pass 22 impeachment motions and cut budgets. It was to sound the alarm against this political abuse that has attempted to neutralize the government affairs. We cannot call them ‘the political party for people’ because they are trying to paralyze government affairs and neutralize the president’s power."

"The opposition Democratic Party is calling the president’s right to declare martial law a rebellion, while arguing impeachment and budget cuts are parliament’s legitimate rights. It is a contradictory argument and a grave rebellion attempt through propaganda aimed at bringing down the president, who was elected by people. The term ’emergency’ in ’emergency martial law’ can only be defined by the president and president only."

STORYLINE:
Lawyers for South Korea’s former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun said Thursday that emergency martial law was declared to sound the alarm against parliament.
The lawyers Yoo Seung Soo and Rhee Ha Sang met with journalists in Seoul on Thursday morning and held a press conference to read a statement by Kim.
Yoo read Kim’s statement which criticized the main opposition party for paralyzing government affairs by passing impeachment motions against officials and cutting the budget.
"We cannot call them ‘the political party for people’ because they are trying to paralyzing government affairs and neutralizing President’s power," Yoo said.
The statement also argued that South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has the right to declare emergency martial law, just as it is the opposition party’s right to impeach government officials and cut budgets.
Kim was arrested by prosecutors on allegations of playing a key role in a rebellion and committing abuse of power. He became the first person formally arrested over Yoon’s martial law decree.
