5. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Claudio Parisi Presicce, Rome’s superintendent for the cultural heritage:
“We experimented a pathway through a catwalk to understand if it was possible to re-establish a direct contact with the monument, a closer view that will allow the visitor to fully appreciate the whole story told by this monstrous, late-Baroque and proto-Neoclassical monument. So based on that experience, we decided to regulate the flow of visitors, granting access to the base of the fountain, covering the entire perimeter of the basin, to 400 people at a time. This way visitors will have ample opportunity to observe it and understand the values it embodies.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Anna Maria Cerioni, in charge of the restoration works at the Rome’s superintendency for cultural heritage:
“The works started September 30th this year and lasted less than three months. In three months we accomplished the objective we had established, that is to conduct maintenance works to the part of the frontal part, the steps. We have redone the waterproofing, as you can see the color is different from before the works, we fixed and cleaned the pool-side that as you can see returned to the look it had after the renovation works. We fixed the stairs and the brick curtain, all the elevated parts around the fountain, we also removed the biological patinas, all the green that was there and all the dirty black edges in all the parts of the fountain.”

“Yes, also (congratulations to) the organization with the people working at the Trevi Fountain (they did a great job). Today it is raining so there will be less people, but it is organized well, the white (of the statues) is great, it’s clear, the renovation is beautiful and well-done, so we are very happy.”

STORYLINE:
After undergoing months of maintenance, the iconic Trevi Fountain, one of Rome’s most celebrated landmarks, reopened to the public on Sunday, just in time for the upcoming Jubilee Year, which is expected to draw millions of visitors to the Eternal City.
Tourists can once again toss coins over their shoulders into the Baroque masterpiece, a tradition temporarily halted during the overhaul works.
According to Roman lore, throwing a coin into the fountain guarantees a return trip to Rome.
The 327,000 euro ($341,000) project, which lasted approximately three months, also included waterproofing the fountain’s basin.
