STORYLINE:
Thousands of Croatians joined a silent march on Monday evening in the capital Zagreb, to mourn the victims of a knife attack at a school last week and to call for better security measures at schools.
Some carried candles as they made their way to the city’s main square.
"Marching without words, without slogans, might, I think, send a much bigger message to the public, to the rest of the country, and beyond," one man said.
On Friday morning, the last day of school before the Christmas holidays, a knife-wielding teenager with a history of mental illness walked into an elementary school in the cityโs western neighbourhood of Precko and stabbed several children and a teacher.
A 7-year-old child was killed in the attack, while three other students and a 50-year-old teacher were wounded.
None are in life-threatening condition, although the teacher, who suffered more than 30 stab wounds, underwent surgery and was put in intensive care.
The 19-year-old attacker was apprehended and also taken to hospital after a suicide attempt.
School attacks are rare in the Balkans.
In May 2023 a school shooting in Belgrade, when a 13-year-old killed nine students and a security guard at an elementary school, shocked the region.
Over the weekend, vigils were held in Zagreb but also in Belgrade, in support of victims of the attack in Precko.
The incident stirred up debates about school safety, the influence of social media, and mental healthcare, with many, including education unions, calling for tighter security measures at schools.
