STORYLINE:
Santa Claus navigated his way along the Negro River in the Brazilian Amazon on Saturday to distribute gifts to children in riverside communities.
In his traditional red suit and rowing a boat filled with presents, Santa travelled along the river to give out gifts to youngsters in the community of Catalão, 40km (25 miles) from the city of Manaus.
The initiative is run by the Santa Claus’s Friends group which has been delivering Christmas presents to rural and riverside communities near Manaus since 1998.
Since the water levels of the Negro and Solimões Rivers remain historically low due to a draught in 2024, the group’s boat travelled only to the community of Catalão instead of multiple locations as in previous years.
On smaller boats, families from other nearby riverside communities were also invited to receive Christmas presents directly from Santa.
"For riverside children, the people of the countryside, there’s not a lot of new things happening," said Raimunda Ferreira Viana, a community leader.
"This here, for us, was like a gift from God. Children, mothers, fathers, grandparents, everyone was happy with the presence of Santa Claus and his friends."
