6. SOUNDBITE (German) Ralph Gleis, director Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie):
“The exhibition "Monet and the Impressionist City" can extend summer a little in Berlin. We have made an effort to bring this Parisian flair into the soul of the exhibition. And as you can see, it revolves around a series of works, three paintings by Monet, all dealing with the modern theme of the city of Paris in transition. This is particularly special because Monet is actually considered the most famous landscape painter among the Impressionists."

9. SOUNDBITE (German) Ralph Gleis, director Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie):
“1867 was the year of the World’s Fair. At that time, Haussmann had essentially turned the entire city upside down. He was the city prefect and architect who, under Napoleon III, transformed the city into a new, modern urban entity, creating wide boulevards, squares, and avenues. And this became a motif for the Impressionists.”

11. SOUNDBITE (German) Ralph Gleis, director Old National Gallery (Alte nationalgalerie):
“What is surprising is that the motifs of the city, architecture, representation, and Impressionism can be put together. This was something new for Monet as well. And when we take a closer look at the main piece from our collection, “Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois,” we can see how these new motifs—specifically the rapid depiction of passersby and figures in the foreground—are very impressionistic. On the other hand, the architecture, with its clearly defined proportions, corners, and edges, somewhat counters the impression of the fleeting and dynamic. Here we can truly observe a shift over time, as the Impressionists managed to conquer new motifs and represent them in a completely new way.”

“It is a facet of Impressionism that is not yet widely known. And in the year of the 150th anniversary of the Impressionist movement—1874 being the year of the first Impressionist exhibition—it is our contribution to offer a fresh perspective on this art movement.”
