“If you’re in the headquarters on December 24th, it is a very active place in Colorado Springs with over a thousand volunteers that are there working together to both answer phone calls and and do the support to track Santa across the 24 hours that occur across the globe.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Lt. Gen. Case A. Cunningham, U.S. Air Force:
“The origin story is a great one. I think it’s a really fun story. It literally started with a typo. And so in 1955, there was a newspaper ad that was for kids to call Santa, and it was run by a department store and there was a misprint on the number that they provided, and the number was an unlisted number that went into the headquarters in the 24/7 watch of what was NORAD’s predecessor. An Air Force colonel answered the phone and, much to his surprise, found a child on the other end asking about Santa’s whereabouts. And so over the course of that conversation, the Air Force colonel shared Santa’s whereabouts and then said, hey, we’re going to get a lot more phone calls tonight based off of that typo in the advertisement. And sure enough, they did. So that was the beginning of the 69 years that NORAD has been doing this.”

“A call usually goes, ‘You’re on speakerphone.’ And there’s a parent who is encouraging or coaching their kids, you know, to say something, ‘Ask Santa your questions.”

“And I’ll tell them where Santa is and then you may get a little question from someone that is saying, "Well, when Santa’s going to go to my house?’ or, ‘Am I on the naughty list or the nice list?’ All the kids I’ve ever had have always been on the nice list.”

STORYLINE:
It’s a Christmas tradition that’s become nearly global in scope: Children from around the world track Santa Claus as he and his reindeer swoop across the earth’s meridians, delivering presents and defying time.

Each year, at least 100,000 kids call into the North American Aerospace Defense Command to ask about the sleigh’s whereabouts. Millions more follow online in nine languages, from English to Japanese.

On any other night, NORAD scans the heavens for potential threats, such as the Chinese spy balloon that floated over the continent last year. But on Christmas Eve, more than 1,000 volunteers field inquiries about Santa at NORAD’s operations center in Colorado Springs, with U.S. presidents sometimes picking up the phone.
