1. SOUNDBITE (English) Mayor Eric Adams, (D) New York:
REPORTER: "What do you want to say, Mayor, about the supporters wearing of Luigi, wearing Luigi costumes, supporters of Luigi across the country?"
ADAMS: "The beauty of this country is that you have the right to protest the right. And those who are protesting when someone use violence to solve the problem. We saw that on the school grounds as well. It sends the wrong message. A person that uses a gun to solve the concern, if it’s on the school campus or on our streets. There are mechanisms in this country on how to organize when those issues are of concern . We saw young people who were tired of shootings on school grounds. They organize and pushed Congress to do weapon bans. That is how we do it here. We don’t use a gun. And anyone that celebrates that it is vile and it is sending the wrong message. And you’re celebrating using violence to solve an issue."

STORYLINE:
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said supporters of Luigi Mangione are sending the wrong message.
Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO faces new federal charges of murder and stalking, escalating the case after his earlier indictment on state charges.
Outside the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, a few supporters of Mangione held signs that say “Luigi the people hear you,” “Murder for profit is terrorism” and “Free Luigi.”
A newly unsealed complaint quotes some of the writings in a notebook prosecutors say was found on Mangione, expressing “hostility towards the health insurance industry and wealthy executives in particular.”
Adams lauded individuals’ right to protest but scolded anyone who uses violence to achieve their goals. "Anyone that celebrates that it is vile and it is sending the wrong message."
